CREATIVE content to build power & disrupt the status quo

Featured Projects

  • No Byhalia Pipeline

In 2019, Plains All American and Valero Energy proposed a 49-mile crude oil pipeline that would run from Memphis to Mississippi. I partnered with local activists and national organizations to produce creative content highlighting the movement.

  • Environmental Injustice

Growing up on Brown Avenue, Belinda K. was exposed to hazardous chemicals from the nearby Velsicol plant after the company dumped toxic waste into Cypress Creek. I partnered with Memphis-based High Ground News to help tell her story.

  • Our Climate, Our Future

Action for the Climate Emergency (ACE) supports young people leading climate justice movements. I partnered with ACE to write the second season of Our Climate, Our Future, an award-winning animated series about climate change.

Hi! I’m Mikhaila Markham.

I believe in the transformative power of art and storytelling in concert with collective action. To this end, I work with nonprofit organizations, researchers, journalists, and publications to create multimedia stories that shift mindsets and inspire action.

Because I work with a diverse client base, I choose to keep my artistic style and offerings flexible. While my personal work is very illustrative, sometimes more traditional graphic design techniques are preferred. One thing that stays the same? I always incorporate lots of input and interaction from the communities and organizations I work alongside.

Ways to work with me

Lots of organizations struggle to make their work approachable and shareable. I collaborate with partners to translate challenging topics and complex data into creative multimedia stories that educate and inspire. There are lots of ways we can work together!

  • In the age of stock photos and one-size-fits-all graphic design, custom illustrations can help your brand stand out! Digital illustrations are great for social media campaigns, multi-page explainers, weekly newsletters, websites, and everything in between!

  • Data is important, but it can be challenging to make complex research approachable. Through illustrated data visualizations and creative storytelling, important findings and ongoing studies can be shared with broader audiences.

  • Stories wield a particularly strong influence over our attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. As such, narrative storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to communicate your organization’s mission and vision.

  • From basic logos and color palettes to comprehensive brand books and websites, we can assemble a branding and identity package that meets your needs, fits your budget, and fosters future growth for your brand.

  • Zines became popular in the 1990s during what is known as the riot grrrl movement – a feminist movement that emerged from the punk music scene of Olympia, Washington. Today, I work with nonprofits and grassroots groups to create zines that function as community resources, inspiring local action and making positive change.
