Thousands of AmericanS are denied abortion care every year.

The Turnaway Study is the largest examination of women’s experiences with unwanted pregnancy and abortion in the US. While this 54-second animation explains a few key findings, many more results are presented in Diana Greene Foster’s book The Turnaway Study: Ten Years, a Thousand Women, and the Consequences of Having—or Being Denied—an Abortion. In addition to other findings, Foster’s book explores the following results:

  • 95% of women felt abortion was the right decision for them. This remained consistent throughout the duration of the study.

  • Being denied an abortion results in economic insecurity for women and their families. They experienced higher levels of debt, lower credit scores, and worse financial security over time.

  • Women who were denied abortion were more likely to continue to be exposed to domestic violence.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, over 561 new abortion restrictions have been introduced across 47 states just since January (as of June 7, 2021).

Reproductive rights are under threat. Congress must act quickly to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. Contact your representatives right here.
